Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
NKJV

2 Corinthians 10:3-5
For though we walk in the flesh we are not serving as soldiers according to the flesh,
For the weapons of your warfare are not fleshly but powerful in God for the tearing down of strongholds, tearing down reasoning’s. Even every high thing being lifted up against the knowledge of God, and taking captive every thought in obedience to Messiah, fixed and being ready to punish every disobedience, then your obedience would be achieved.

Greek word for "Pulling Down"

When we think of the word powerful we have a tendency to think of how strong someone or something is. But the use of the word "powerful" in this instance in Hebrews actually means "effective". This scripture is telling us how effective the Word of God is. And in doing so it gives us this example of this effectiveness by using the most effective weapon known to man kind at that present time, the two-edged sword. During that time the invention of the two-edged sword by the Romans was the most "powerful", "effective", weapon available to a soldier. It was able to be used in a side to side fashion without the soldier having to turn the weapon over. This weapon could slice clear through something on both edges. Both edges of this particular sword were razer sharp. A warrior could go forth and wield this weapon back and forth and pretty much cut down anyone in his path.

In this scripture Paul is showing us that the Word of God is even more "powerful", more "effective", than even the two-edged sword. This scripture is telling us that the Word of God is the most effectual weapon we have available to us to fight against the enemy. This weapon is "more effective", meaning this weapon WORKS better the best of anything man could possibly even conceive and create. When used right and spoken from a heart of faith this weapon, the Word of God, literally cuts down anything in our path that would try and exalt itself against the Most High God. There is no weapon formed against us whether in the natural or the spiritual that can harm us when we fight ainst it with the Word of God.

When weapons were created by man they were created to enable an army to be successful in a war against their enemies. When in battle we need to have something at our disposal that allows us to go from a defensive position, when we are attacked, to an offensive position and come out of the battle victorious. Weapons of warfare are the instruments we use to defeat an enemy that is literally hell bent on destroying us. The weapons of our warfare in a spiritual battle are not man made they are spiritual weapons yet they are more powerful, more effective than any weapon made by man. No man made weapon is or can be effective against a a spiritual enemy.

A stronghold is an influence by the enemy over a certain area of a persons life whether it is an emotional, physical, mental, or financial stronghold or whether it is a stronghold  over the environment of a persons life. The strength of the stronghold depends on how long and how much influence a person has allowed over themselves by listening to what the enemy is saying concerning any given situation in which the stronghold has taken root. For instance gambling, pornography, lust, and poverty are all strongholds over a person. And the strength of those strongholds comes from how often the person gives into their influence.

The enemy would have us to believe that a stronghold is something that we must endure and is a permanent part of our life. We must not listen to this lie of the enemy for the Word of God tells us we must pull down these strongholds that have taken root. A stronghold is not the same as possession by the enemy but can be just as destructive in our lives as possession. A stronghold is an influence in our life. It is allowing the enemy to tell us his version of his truth over our lives and believing his version instead of what the Word of God says is the truth over our lives.

The Greek word for "pulling down" quite literally means the total destruction and annihilation of something. It is not just simply pulling something away and setting it aside it is the complete destruction of something causing that "thing' to cease to exist. The Word of God tells us we are to overcome the enemy, we are to pull down those strongholds he has caused to take root in our life. God tells us in Revelation that we overcome the enemy through the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony. The word of our testimony is taking the word of God and applying it to our lives, speaking it over our life and speaking it over or against any thing or situation that arises against us. Whether it is in the physical sense or the spiritual sense, whether it is emotionally, mentally, spiritually, physically or financially. The Word of God tells us that it is quick and powerful and that it is sharper than any two edged sword and that it can quite literally destroy any and all strongholds of the enemy in and over our lives.
