Many look at this scripture and their main thought is, Jesus Christ died and paid the price for my sins so that I might have eternal life with God the Father. And while that is the Gospel message, it is only half of that message. It is only half of the scripture of 2 Corinthians 5:21.  If we read that scripture again closely and focus on one word we can see the Gospel message in its entirety.

"For He made Him who knew no sin, to be sin for us, THAT we might become the righteousness of God."

Yes Jesus died for our sins so that we might be brought back into reconciliation with God the Father but in order for Jesus to even meet the criteria of God to be able to do that he had to be completely  "righteous". There could be no shadow or hint of sin within. He had to be pure in His righteousness. And the word tells us here that Jesus met that criteria.

When we come before God the Father and His Son Jesus and we ask Jesus to come into our life He takes up residence within our heart, which is our very spirit, the essence of who we are and we are changed in an instant from a dead unrighteous spirit being into a new creature, a spirit alive in Christ unto eternal life with the Father. And at the moment Christ takes up residence within our heart the very Righteousness of Christ is imparted to us and we become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. God no longer sees us as sinful man. He looks at us through that shed righteous blood of Christ and He sees Jesus and His perfect character. His righteousness that has transformed our heart, our spirit man.

The Righteousness of God
2 Corinthians 5:21

"For He made Him who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him."
